COSTA MESA : No Funds Set Aside for Possible El Toro Suit

Share

The City Council has decided not to designate funds for possible future legal costs associated with Measure A, an initiative approved by voters last fall that calls for converting El Toro Marine Corps Air Station into a commercial airport.

But the council at its meeting this week asked City Atty. Thomas Kathe to draft a resolution showing support for Measure A, which was backed by 63% of the city’s voters.

The council requested the resolution after rejecting one written by Citizens for Jobs and the Economy, a nonprofit organization that is calling on the 22 cities that voted for the initiative to help defend it in court if a lawsuit is filed.

“It was widely felt by the council that we did not want to commit funds to a lawsuit,” Mayor Joe Erickson said. “And if we approved the resolution we might have had to commit funds, and we did not want to take that chance.”

Kathe is drawing up a resolution that will be presented at the May 1 council meeting.
