Caltrans Appoints Regional Director

The California Department of Transportation has appointed Ken Steele, a transportation engineer with 37 years experience, to manage the 1,181 miles of freeways and roadways running through Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Steele will assume his responsibilities as district director on May 1, managing a staff of 2,600 employees and a yearly budget of more than $200 million.

“He brings to his very challenging assignment a wealth of knowledge about transportation in general and particularly in California,” Caltrans Director James W. van Loben Sels said in a statement. “He will provide an experienced, steady hand in overseeing the state transportation system and directing future improvements.”

Steele comes to the job from a similar position in San Bernardino and western Riverside counties. He has also worked in the San Joaquin Valley. He is a licensed civil engineer and a graduate of Cal State Los Angeles.
