BRILL CREAM: Director Alison Anders’ currently filming “Grace of My Heart” is loosely based on the Brill Building, the ‘50s-’60s New York pop music factory instrumental in the careers of Phil Spector, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Burt Bacharach and many others. But Anders is making sure that the film’s music spans the decades . . . literally.

For many of the movie’s original songs, she’s paired Brill-era composers with current artists, including teaming Bacharach with Elvis Costello, Carole Bayer Sager with former Eurythmic Dave Stewart, and Gerry Goffin with Los Lobos. Among others providing music on or off screen are Victoria Williams (playing a singing nun), the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shawn Colvin, Lesley Gore, the Williams Brothers and Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis.

One musical pairing didn’t pan out. Anders wanted Madonna, who is featured in Anders’ segment of the upcoming “Four Rooms” anthology film, to write with Brill veteran Ellie (“Leader of the Pack”) Greenwich, but their schedules didn’t mesh.

Madonna’s Maverick company had also been in discussions with Anders about the writer-director’s script “Lexicon Devil,” based on the life of the late L.A. punk legend Darby Crash. That deal didn’t work out, says Anders, who is fielding interest from several other companies, spurred by the current punk revival. Plans are for the project to be directed by Dave Markee (who did the film “The Year That Punk Broke” about Sonic Youth).
