AUTO RACING : Lockyer Second in First Time Behind the Wheel

Share

Daryl Lockyer figured that he had had enough of building race cars for other drivers.

Lockyer, who is the crew chief for Winston West driver Rich DeLong, decided it was time to put himself in the driver’s seat.

And if Lockyer hadn’t tangled up with Tim Wheeler in Turn 4, his debut might have been a winning one in the Pure Stock main event Saturday night at Saugus Speedway.

Instead Lockyer finished second to Reseda’s Brian Horst.

Lockyer was leading on Lap 13 when Wheeler forced him high into the turn. Lockyer squeezed between Wheeler and the wall but sustained damage to the rack of his vehicle.

Other then the Lockyer-Wheeler incident, the main was a clean race with no yellow flags.

“I’m tickled to death with a second-place finish,” Lockyer said. “When I started building this car six weeks ago it was nightmare. Now it’s worth it.”

In the Street Stock main event, Don Hefler of Mission Hills got his first victory of the season, outrunning Dana Moore of Valencia.
