‘Naked’

Share

This unnerving 1993 British film won several critics awards, notably best director for Mike Leigh and best actor for the searing performance of David Thewlis (pictured) as its sour protagonist. Johnny is a refugee from Manchester who’s fled to London in a stolen car after committing a rape; he is a vicious misogynist who verbally assaults anyone within striking distance. “Naked” is a record of Johnny’s two hellish nights on the bitter streets, detailing the people he comes into contact with, the eccentrics and dead-enders with nowhere else to go but at each other’s throats. There’s a provocative thread of unspoken social consciousness that flows beneath the surface, for Johnny’s anger is more than personal and expresses the frustration of Britain’s on-the-dole underclass (Cinemax early Tuesday at 4:30 a.m.).
