LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Supervisors Seek Money for Services at State Beaches

Share

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to keep its lifeguards and maintenance crews on eight state-owned beaches but only if the state agrees to cough up more money for their upkeep.

In yet another round in the seemingly endless haggling over who will control some of Southern California’s choicest beachfront property, the board agreed to service the beaches through November if the state is willing to pay the county $1.5 million for the 1995-96 fiscal year.

The board gave the state until Monday to decide. The supervisors had already set a May 2 deadline for pulling lifeguards and maintenance crews off the beaches and handing those functions back to the state.

In response to that ultimatum, the state had countered with an offer of $4.5 million over the next three years--but only if the county had agreed to assume ownership of the beaches.
