OXNARD : School Meeting to Be in 2 Languages

Share

In an effort to get parents more involved in their children’s education, the Oxnard elementary school board tonight will conduct its twice-monthly meeting simultaneously in Spanish and English at a school site.

Parents attending the 7 p.m. meeting at McKinna School will be able to don headsets to hear simultaneous translations of each speaker.

This will be the second time that the Oxnard School District holds its meeting at a school site and provides simultaneous translation. In March, about 200 parents attended a similar meeting at Frank Intermediate School.

The Board of Trustees usually meets at district headquarters on A Street, but to increase parent participation, district officials decided to hold several of their meetings at various campuses around the district.

Eighty percent of the school district’s 13,000 students are Latino, and 49% of those students speak English as a second language.

About 80 headsets will be provided to Spanish-speaking parents at tonight’s meeting. The district will also provide baby-sitting services for parents who need them. Education technology for the future and whether the district should make its dress code more restrictive are among the items slated for discussion.
