After Oklahoma City: Talk Radio Responds : Clinton, Too, Blew It

Syndicated felon G. Gordon Liddy has advised his audience to “shoot for the head” if Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents “smash in unannounced and assault you.” Agents wear bulletproof flak jackets, he explains, making a head shot more effective.

If we’ve got problems with the ATF--and I do--then why don’t we elect men and women to office who will straighten out our law enforcement agencies? Liddy is proof enough that anyone can make anything happen in this great nation of ours.

But the President, too, has to be careful with his rhetoric and is wrong when he blames only loud and obsessed voices for corrupting our national discourse. As compassionate and strong as he has been since the bombing, he blew an opportunity on “60 Minutes” to admit that our government mishandled the events in Waco and that federal agents have no right to abuse their power. In America, we are the government; the government is us.

Most Americans know that we live in the greatest country on Earth, the freest country in the world’s history. As a political independent, I ask the same standard of all callers, presidents and newsmakers: Tell the truth. Stop fudging. And could we please lose the name calling, on all sides? Not every ill in our nation is committed by liberals. And do Americans really wake up in the morning and declare themselves conservatives, above all else? I doubt it. We are all Americans under the skin.

The greatest legacy to the people who died in Oklahoma City would be to raise the quality of what we’re all saying. Our national discourse is not a tool to garner 43% in a presidential election or 600 affiliated radio stations.
