OXNARD : Students Lobby to Keep 3-Class Format

Share

Half a dozen Hueneme High School students pleaded with Oxnard Union High School District trustees Wednesday to overturn a decision to return the campus to a traditional six-period day starting this fall.

Hueneme High Principal Joanne Black announced three weeks ago that the campus would no longer follow a so-called block schedule. Under a block schedule, students take three 90-minute classes each day instead of six shorter classes.

The return to a traditional schedule would increase instructional time, encourage continuity in classes and, it is hoped, boost academic achievement, Hueneme High educators said.

But students told the school board Wednesday that they like the block schedule and do not want to return to a longer school day. Most students start school at 7:30 a.m. and are out by 12:30 p.m. under the block schedule.

Board members said they could not comment on the students’ complaints because the issue was not on the agenda.
