MUNICH, Germany — A World War II veteran burned himself to death to protest what he called the postwar suppression of the German people, police said Wednesday.
The 75-year-old man set himself on fire Tuesday outside the Feldherrnhalle, the building to which Adolf Hitler marched his followers during their failed 1923 putsch, police said. He left a three-page letter condemning the vilification of German soldiers during a debate now raging over how to mark the 50th anniversary of the war’s end.
