Violeta Meherin, a Westlake Village resident who became a nurse at age 61, has died. She was 86.

The daughter of a single mother, Meherin grew up in San Francisco and moved to Los Angeles County after she was married in 1937, said her son Gerry Meherin.

After raising two sons and being a homemaker for 37 years, Meherin went back to school where she obtained a nursing degree. At age 61, she began working for Kaiser Permanente in Panorama City, her son said.

In 1985, Meherin purchased a townhouse in Westlake Village where she moved, he said. She retired in 1989 at age 81.

After retiring, Meherin spent her time playing golf, painting and taking daily walks, her son said.

Meherin died Wednesday at Kaiser Permanente in Woodland Hills after a long illness.

In addition to her son, she is survived by another son, David Meherin of Chatsworth, five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary, Westlake Village.
