Wi Shoots 74, Trails Pac-10 Leader by 2 Strokes

Charlie Wi of Cal remained in contention for the Pacific 10 Conference individual golf title with a third-round 74 on Tuesday at Meadow Springs Golf Club in Richland, Wash.

Wi, a fifth-year senior from North Hills who played at Westlake High, is in second place with a 54-hole total of 212, two shots behind leader Scott Johnson of Arizona State with one round left.

USC’s Chad Wright, a sophomore who played at Buena High, is tied for sixth at 218. Play was hampered by light rains and winds gusting to 20 m.p.h. No player broke par.

Dean Yoshiyama of Huntington Beach fired a handicap-adjusted 70 in the second round Tuesday to edge Walter Kearns of West Hills in the top flight of the 1995 Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur Net Championship at Palm Valley Country Club in Palm Desert.

Kearns held a three-shot lead over Yoshiyama after the first round of play in the President’s Flight, for players with handicaps between 3.5 to 7.4, but Kearns struggled to a 74 in the second round. Alan Kane of Studio City tied for fourth at 142.

Jack Mitchell of Burbank finished at 141, seven shots off the pace in the Vice-President’s Flight (7.5 to 12.4). Joel Myden of Woodland Hills tied for fourth at 143.

Todd Lewis of Sherman Oaks shot 140 to finish third in the Secretary’s Flight (12.5 to 18.4). He was four shots off the lead.

Jim Parke of Lancaster won the Treasurer’s Flight (18.5 to 24.4) with rounds of 60 and 70. Jim Henson of Encino tied for third at 137.

Baseball

Cal State Northridge catcher Robert Fick, who has hit 11 home runs, is questionable for today’s game against Cal State Fullerton.

Fick has a badly sprained left wrist, which he injured against Hawaii last weekend.

A bruised elbow will keep designated hitter Andy Shaw, who has 13 homers, sidelined until Friday’s Fresno State series opener.

Former Simi Valley High shortstop Dave Milstien has signed a Class-A minor league contract with the Midwest League’s Beloit Snappers, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Milstien last month was released from the Chicago White Sox’s triple-A affiliate in Nashville, Tenn.

The Golden State Baseball League announced that its inaugural season will begin with four teams instead of six.

Franchises in Merced and Paso Robles were scrapped because the clubs had trouble securing playing facilities, league officials said.

The schedule for the newly formed independent minor league has been reduced to 92 games, beginning in early June.

The league will consist of teams from Antelope Valley, Chico, Imperial Valley and Yuma, Ariz.

Track and Field

Jason Shirey of Agoura High, the leading discus thrower in the Marmonte League, has been declared academically ineligible and will miss the rest of the season. Shirey finished fourth in last year’s league finals with a personal best of 155 feet 6 inches and ranks third on this year’s region list at 151-6.

Softball

Hart High’s Tracy Clark has signed to play at Cal State Northridge. The senior third baseman, a four-year starter who is batting .480, said she will play outfield for the Matadors.

Catcher Meredith Butler of Hoover has signed a letter of intent with Loyola Marymount. Butler is batting .333.

Malibu High softball coach Ed Aronin said Tuesday that the team has been disbanded due to a lack of players. Aronin, whose team finished 2-9, 1-8 in Frontier League play, started the season with 10 players but often had only four or five at practices.

“A couple of our girls could play on any team in the league but I wasn’t going to baby-sit the rest of them,” Aronin said.

Chatsworth High junior pitcher Parisa Plant (9-3, 1.75 ERA) will miss the first two rounds of the City Section 4-A Division playoffs because she sprained her pitching shoulder last week against El Camino Real.

Field Hockey

Ventura’s Ben Maruquin leads a group of 14 area players selected to compete in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Colorado in July.

Of the 56 Olympic Festival spots, 12 are filled by Ventura County athletes, including Maruquin, the 1994 player of the year.

Other Ventura County selections are Larry Amar, Nicholas Butcher, Matt Cody, Jeff Fermin, Matt Garcia, Ryan Langford, Michael Lee, Shawn Nakamura, Taylor Trickle, Alex Wijnveldt, Scott Williams and Matt Yarborough. Northridge’s Davinder Plaha and Bhupinder Mudhar of Sylmar also were selected.

Tennis

Derek Pope of Ojai has been selected to the All-Big Ten Conference first team. The former Nordhoff High player is the first freshman in Indiana history picked for the team. Pope, who is ranked No. 6 in singles in the Big Ten, also was named the conference’s freshman of the year.

Football

Thousand Oaks senior wide receiver-defensive back Eddie Chung (5 feet 11, 175 pounds) will play at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, former Lancer Coach Bob Richards said.

Basketball

Burbank High forward Juni Williams has been chosen to the all-state freshman team by Cal-Hi Student Sports magazine. Williams also has been invited to the Nike Camp in Illinois in July. Others invited are Eddie Miller of Chatsworth and Jason and Jarron Collins of Harvard-Westlake.
