INGLEWOOD : School District Workers Stage Protest Over Pay
Members of a union representing classified staff held a lunchtime rally Wednesday, protesting the wages paid to employees of the Inglewood Unified School District.
The California Professional Employees Local 2345 represents more than 650 custodians, office workers, food service workers, instructional aides, police and maintenance workers. District workers have not had a pay raise for 2 1/2 years.
Union officials say the district has more than $800,000 in funds that have not been appropriated, enough money to increase the salaries of all employees by 2.2%. In addition, the union has submitted suggestions for budget cuts that would save the district an additional $800,000.
District spokeswoman Elizabeth Norwood said she is unaware of any money available for pay increases. District officials would like to give raises, she said, and are “diligently working to bring a budget that would allow for that.”
Union officials said they will continue negotiations with the district.
