SIMI VALLEY : School Asks Families to Dig In at Planting

Simi Valley families are invited to bring trowels and rakes to Mountain View Elementary School on Saturday to participate in campus beautification day.

The annual gardening project will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through the day, Principal Karyn Cryster said.

Last year, about 40 parents and children helped landscape the school property, planting shrubs and trees around the small campus.

“They bring their digging tools, their brooms,” Cryster said. “It’s really fun.”

Local shops have donated trees, flowers and plants to beautify the central Simi Valley campus, Cryster said, and grocery stores have donated food and drinks for volunteers.

Although the school has held beautification days for years, the event is particularly significant this year since Mountain View was one of three schools targeted earlier this year for possible closure, Cryster said.

But the school board voted last month to table the proposal to shut down either Mountain View, Simi or Sycamore schools.

“It feels real good to spruce up,” Cryster said, “because we know it is here to stay.”
