BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Anderson to Miss a Start

Share

Left-hander Brian Anderson, who suffered a strained left biceps Friday night, will probably miss one start and return to the rotation Saturday in Kansas City. The Angels have an off day Monday, so they will skip Anderson’s spot and Mark Langston, Scott Sanderson and Shawn Boskie will pitch during the three-game series against Texas that begins Tuesday night.

Anderson, who was examined by trainer Ned Bergert on Saturday, said his arm felt “much better” than he thought it would Saturday morning.

“I expected it to be really stiff, but it’s not that bad,” said Anderson, who left after throwing an 0-2 fastball to Mike Blowers leading off the fifth inning. “I felt a little something on my last warm-up pitch, and then didn’t feel anything on the first pitch, which was a curve. But when I opened up a little too much on the fastball he fouled off, I really felt it go.”

Anderson threw one more pitch to Blowers, “just to make sure it was still attached,” and then left the game.

“There’s a deep soreness in there, kind of like a deep bruise,” he said, “but with a little treatment, I’m pretty sure I’ll be ready to go in Kansas City.”

The Angels unveiled their new navy blue uniform tops Saturday night. They will wear them on Saturdays only, at home and on the road. Why an alternate uniform? It’s another item for the souvenir shops. . . . Reliever Lee Smith, reaching into a bucket of balls on his way to the outfield for pregame warm-ups: “Let’s see, give me about five balls. I got to play catch with Mitch (Williams).” . . . Seattle put shortstop Felix Fermin on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right calf muscle and recalled shortstop Alex Rodriguez, the first player drafted in the 1993 draft, from Tacoma.
