VENTURA : Items Sought for Harbor Time Capsule

Share

From in-line skates to seashells to parts of old boats, the Channel Islands Harbor Committee is looking for items that represent life at the harbor in 1995.

The committee is filling a time capsule as part of the harbor’s 30th anniversary celebration.

“Anyone can submit anything,” anniversary committee member Catherine Welch said. “Whether it’s newspaper articles or menus or personal items. We’re looking for things that will be fun to look back on in 20 or 30 years.”

The founders of Channel Islands Harbor buried a capsule in Conejo Park during a celebration in 1965. Welch said that capsule will stay buried for 20 more years, until the harbor’s 50th anniversary.

The new capsule, however, will remain above ground. The 2-by-4-foot capsule will be sealed with transparent material May 27, when the anniversary celebration begins. It will be displayed immediately in the Maritime Museum at Fisherman’s Wharf.

“It will be interesting to see what the public thinks will be an important memoir of 1995 at the harbor,” Welch said.

Residents can drop off their items at the museum, which is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
