During the same year the United States of America was born on the East Coast, Father Junipero Serra founded Mission San Juan Capistrano on the West Coast.

It was on the Feast of All Saints Day--Nov. 1, 1776--that the Franciscan priest offered a prayer that the new mission would be blessed and prosper.

In December, 1776, a 6-year-old named Nanojibar became

the first Native American to be baptized at the mission. A book on the mission points out that more than 2,000 Native Americans had been baptized at San Juan Capistrano by the start of the 19th Century.
