HUNTINGTON BEACH : City to Decide if Adult Business Can Expand

Share

The proposed expansion of Paradise Specialties, an adult-oriented store next to Golden West College, will be determined by planning commissioners now that the City Council has reinstated a law that bans adult businesses from operating within 500 feet of any school frequented by minors.

Store owner Rosalie Taddeo has asked the city to approve the expansion of Paradise Specialties, which sells adult-oriented items such as lingerie, novelty toys and videos.

Last fall, the city amended its law to prohibit adult businesses from operating within 500 feet of any public or private school. Under the law, Taddeo likely would not receive city approval to expand the store because it is located 220 feet from the college campus.

But May 1, the council changed course again, reverting to the original code, which prohibited adult-oriented businesses only near schools attended by minors.

“Fortunately, the City Council was wise enough to straighten out this bureaucratic glitch that was created,” said Taddeo’s attorney, Roger Jon Diamond.
