Things Get Too Quiet in This Series

CHICAGO — Embarrassed by a media boycott that has widened to include most of the Chicago and Orlando starters, NBA Commissioner David Stern has directed the league to intervene.
Stern, informed of the problem at Sunday’s Bulls-Magic game, asked Brian McIntyre, his vice-president for public relations, “What’s going on around here?”
Briefed by McIntyre, Stern then declared, “No Steve Carltons here.”
McIntyre said he has met with officials for both teams. “I’m sure you’ll see more cooperation,” he told reporters.
Orlando’s Shaquille O’Neal, who has talked only after victories, made one comment Sunday: “Happy Mother’s Day.”
