Friday is the deadline to sign up for a free seminar on the international space station scheduled for Saturday.

The meeting, called “Space Station for the Near Future,” will be coordinated by the Los Angeles Community Reuse Organization. It will include a brief overview of the still developing station’s history.

Speakers also will discuss recent breakthroughs in space technology to be incorporated during the construction phases of the $15.3 billion multinational space station expected to begin operation by 2003.

Additionally, Rocketdyne’s Michael J. Kiley, a program manager for the station’s power distribution system, will inform meeting participants of the economic benefits that could spring from the station’s construction.

Due to the technological demands of developing a sophisticated power distribution system in space, Rocketdyne officials said, a market in new solar dependent devices worth about $3 billion annually can find its way into buildings and homes on earth.

A number of subcontractors in the Los Angeles area are already working to develop products adaptable to both space and earth uses, officials said.

The seminar will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Energy Technology Engineering Center, off Woolsey Canyon Road in the Chatsworth hills. For directions and additional information, call (818) 586-6424.
