USC junior Balazs Kiss set a collegiate record with a 268-foot 10-inch hammer throw to win his third consecutive Pacific 10 title in the event at the conference meet Friday in Tucson. The throw is the world’s best this year.

Kiss, from Hungary, shattered the former mark, set by Oregon’s Ken Flax in 1986, by 11 feet 10 inches. Kiss said that a good night’s sleep boosted his performance.

“When I got up from sleeping this morning, I said, ‘Yes. It’s over. The record’s gone,’ ” said Kiss, who also has won two NCAA titles in the event.
