Rod Stewart just shot a video at L.A.’s Park Plaza Hotel for his new single, “Leave Virginia Alone,” a song written by Tom Petty that will be on Stewart’s “A Spanner in the Works” album, due June 6. . . .

R&B; sex symbol R. Kelly is nearly finished with his next album, due late fall, but don’t look for him on the concert trail before summer ’96. Kelly is taking time out from these sessions to produce and write several songs for an Isley Brothers album that’s coming in late summer. . . .

Dates are being assembled now for Vanessa Williams’ first U.S. tour--playing theaters--this fall. . . . Teddy Pendergrass is recording an album of his own oldies. The songs date back to the ‘70s, including his early solo years his days with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. . . .

Afghan Whigs are writing songs for a new album, but in the meantime the Ohio band can be seen in the upcoming movie “Beautiful Girls,” performing versions of an old Barry White number and one by Frederick Knight. The film, featuring Tim Hutton, Uma Thurman, Matt Dillon and Rosie O’Donnell, is due in the fall. . . .

Columbia Records has scored three sought-after bands in the current feeding frenzy, signing Seattle’s Presidents of the United States, New York’s D-Generation (which had been dropped by EMI) and L.A.’s Elephant. . . .

David Bowie is expected to return to U.S. concert stages in late summer, though there’s no word on whether he’ll keep his pledge of a few years ago to never again perform his old hits. In addition to his “Outside” album, which will be the first in his new deal with Virgin, he’s readying “Inside,” a collection of electronic pieces reminiscent of his 1977 album “Low,” which like the new albums involved collaborations with Brian Eno.
