PICO-UNION : Benefit to Honor Community Leaders

Share

A group of local tenant-rights activists and other community leaders will be honored Thursday by the nonprofit Central American Resource Center at its 11th annual fund-raising dinner.

The center, which has provided legal, social and educational services to the Pico-Union/Westlake Latino community since 1983, honors four individuals or groups each year for their contributions to the community.

One of the honorees is Inquilinos Unidos, a tenant-rights group that since 1979 has disseminated information to thousands of renters throughout central Los Angeles on how they can work together to improve their living conditions. The group also has provided assistance and referrals to victims of illegal evictions, discrimination and landlord harassment.

Other honorees include Joe Hicks, a longtime civil rights activist who now heads the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and R. Samuel Paz, an attorney who has specialized in representing people of color in police brutality cases.

The law firm of Loeb & Loeb will also be honored for its many pro bono legal contributions in civil rights matters.

The master of ceremonies will be comedian Cheech Marin, who was honored by CARECEN in 1992. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. at the Biltmore Hotel, 506 S. Grand Ave.

Tickets are $75.
