COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Puget Sound Makes SCC Settle for 3rd

Southern California College fell short of the title game at the NAIA softball championships, losing to Puget Sound (Wash.), 4-3, in an elimination game at Columbia, Mo., to finish third.

The Vanguards, who won three games Friday, including a 3-1 victory over Puget Sound, opened the day with a 4-0 loss to Oklahoma City, which later defended its title with a 3-1 victory over the Loggers.

SCC, which finished the season 44-22, struck first against the Loggers with one run in the first inning on second baseman Jen Caruso’s sacrifice fly.

But the Loggers (30-11), playing their third game of the day, scored three runs in the bottom of the inning off three SCC pitchers.

The Vanguards tied the score, 3-3, in the fourth, but Puget Sound scored one run on shortstop Heather Paulsen’s single to take the lead for good, 4-3.

Four Vanguards were selected to the all-tournament team: Shannon O’Rourke, catcher Amy Lewis and pitchers Shannon Saylor and Gretchen Brandt.

In nonconference baseball:

Miami 3, Long Beach State 2--Miami (42-14) scored three runs in five innings off 49er pitcher Scott Rivette.

Jeff Liefer and Kirk Pierce had RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh inning for Long Beach State (35-23-1).

In the NCAA West Regional golf tournament:

UC Irvine finishes 14th--UC Irvine finished with a three-day score of 890 to place 14th at Albuquerque, N.M. Arizona State won the regional.

Anteater teammates Steve Holmes and Kevin Yamauchi finished tied for 24th with a total score of 219.

Stanford’s Tiger woods, a Western High graduate, shot three rounds of even par 72 to finish tied for 18th.
