Hard to Find That Rampant Crime

Share

When reading Jeff Davis’ Youth Opinion (“Getting Stabbed--It’s a Laugh,” May 10), I could not help but be surprised at how he makes it seem as if drug dealings, stabbings and murders are easy to witness. I hear about these stories and yet I personally have never encountered anything close to any of his stories.

I attended what I consider a decent high school in an average suburb and from what I heard, drug dealings went on every day during school hours. The school was not very big, and yet not once in my entire four years did I see one bit of evidence of drugs. In my last two years there, gangs became prevalent on my high school campus (or so I heard). And yet I had never noticed them.

Jeff Davis writes about how he and his friends witnessed drug dealings, stabbings and other acts of violence as if they were things you see just walking down a suburban street. I am not a hermit; I attend classes every day, I go out with my friends often and yet I have never witnessed anything close to those acts.

I know that these things do go on in nearly every community and I am sure that parents are concerned about what their children may witness on the streets. But, rest assured, it’s not as easy to catch a violent act as it seems.
