Starting Is Hard Part at Saugus

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The toughest task for drivers Saturday night at Saugus Speedway seemed to be getting started. Once they did, Gerrit Cromsigt was able to snag a victory from Kirk Miller in the 25-lap main event.

Race officials declared a restart in the Street Stock main event when Steve Gilmore spun out in the first turn. Compounding the rocky start was T.K. Karvasek’s tangle with a wall in the third turn on the first lap.

Super late model drivers fared no better starting their race.

A red flag was thrown on the opening lap when Edward Dazzo plowed into Ken Sapper coming out of the fourth turn.

Neither driver finished the 50-lap main, which was delayed for an hour by the accident.

After the delay, another accident occurred on the first lap when Dennis Logue was involved in a spin-out on the first turn. Results of the race were unavailable at press time.

The first four laps of the Street Stock resulted in a restart and two yellow flags. Cromsigt, the points leader in the Street Stock Division, won his second main event.

Cromsigt snatched the lead from Miller on the 23rd lap during a yellow flag. He then held off Miller and San Pedro’s Mike Price over the final two laps.

Of the 24 cars which started, only 11 finished the main.

A promising start for Canyon Country’s Julianne Seeley also ended early in the Street Stock oval. Seeley, who won a Figure 8 heat race, collided with Mike Gilmore on the second turn and was unable to continue.

The Street Stock main qualifying race was hampered by a seven car pile-up on the first lap.
