A Port Hueneme psychiatric hospital has been commended by the organization that accredits hospitals throughout the United States, one of only 24 California facilities currently holding that distinction.

Anacapa Hospital was notified last week that its three-year accreditation comes with a commendation, hospital administrator John J. Megara said..

“This outstanding level of achievement reflects the successful efforts of your organization to provide high quality care for those you serve,” Charles H. Bair, executive vice president of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, wrote in a letter to Anacapa.

Anacapa is an acute-care psychiatric hospital with 48 beds, half of which are reserved for adolescents and the remainder for adults.

Also at the site is a 90-bed residential-care facility that treats patients for chemical dependency, depression, anxiety and eating disorders, among other things.

That facility also received a commendation when it renewed its accreditation last year, Megara said.

“To get one commendation is outstanding,” he said. “But to get two for two different levels of care is, I don’t believe, heard of. . . . Of course we’re thrilled. “

Megara said there are about 500 acute-care hospitals in California.

The commission released a list of the 23 hospitals besides Anacapa that received commendations. Anacapa is Ventura County’s only hospital that made the list.
