Firm Denies Role in Cigarette Recall: Hoechst Celanese Corp., the U.S. subsidiary of German chemical group Hoechst, denied that its products had contaminated cigarettes recalled last week by tobacco giant Philip Morris. Hoechst Celanese said it had found nothing to show its products were to blame for the recall of about 8 billion cigarettes after it was named by Philip Morris as a possible source of tainted raw materials. The tobacco company blamed the filter defect on a contaminated plasticizer material used to give the filters firmness. Brands affected include Marlboro, Merit, Virginia Slims, Basic and Cambridge.
