About 1,800 vehicles filled with people eager to experience nature’s wonders were turned back at the park gates because of Memorial Day weekend crowding.

Officials shut the gates to most day-use visitors for four hours Saturday and five hours Sunday because all parking spaces in Yosemite Valley were filled, ranger Nikyra Calcagno said.

Visitors on Memorial Day itself had better luck. Park use dropped to 95% capacity Monday, with room for everyone who wanted in, Calcagno said.

The need to restrict access to the popular Sierra Nevada park was not unexpected. Yosemite’s waterfalls are more spectacular than usual this year because of heavy spring runoff. About 2,000 vehicles were delayed up to four hours one weekend earlier.
