The City Council has approved the applications of eight community organizations to sell fireworks for the Fourth of July.

Though some residents in the past have opposed the sale of fireworks in the city, Mayor Harry Dotson said, he supports the sale by these nonprofit groups.

“We feel that we have adequate fire protection,” Dotson said last week. “Besides, the sale is very important for these groups, and they all benefit the city because they serve the community.”

Still, the issue of fireworks sales is a hot button for some in Stanton, and Dotson said he expects the issue will be put before voters within the year.

The eight groups approved to sell fireworks beginning July 1 are the Calvary Assembly of God, the Stanton Little League, the Stanton Neighborhood Center, the Kiwanis Club of Stanton, the Boys and Girls Club of Stanton, American Legion Post 783, the Knights of Columbus and Boy Scout Troop 111.
