Under agreements approved by the City Council, two community-based theater groups will stage productions at Brea’s Curtis Theatre. A total of 64 performances are planned, which will constitute the majority of the 1995-96 season.

Prism Productions, which staged the counterculture musical “Hair” at the city-owned theater last season, plans to present “Cabaret” and “Follies” this season.

“Cabaret,” a musical set in a Berlin nightclub before World War II, will open Sept. 15 and run through Oct. 8. “Follies,” a Stephen Sondheim musical that contrasts the reality of life with the unreality of theater, will open on April 19 of next year and continue through May 12.

Vanguard Productions will present “Charley’s Aunt,” a British comedy by Brandon Thomas; and “Dangerous Liaisons,” a drama about decadent life among the aristocracy before the French Revolution. “Charley’s Aunt” is scheduled to run from Oct. 27 through Nov. 19. “Dangerous Liaisons” is booked for March 1 through March 24 of next year.

The city will receive 4% of gross box office sales and concession revenues from the productions at Curtis Theatre, which is in the Brea Civic & Cultural Center.
