Two employees of a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store were shot Wednesday after one of the workers pulled a knife on a gun-wielding man who was attempting to rob the store, authorities said.

The gunman is still at large, said Burbank Police Lt. Larry Koch. Neither of the two employees suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack, he said.

Koch said the man entered the store in the 4300 block of West Magnolia Boulevard shortly before noon and demanded money, brandishing a handgun at Ronald Kelly, 57, of Burbank and Francesca Nie, 58, of Los Angeles.

Nie reached for a knife, Koch said, and the man shot her in the stomach and Kelly in the back.

“She was trying to defend herself after he demanded the cash and pointed the weapon at her,” Koch said.

The gunman fled to a two-door, red Ford getaway car, Koch said.

Police are continuing to look for any witnesses to the crime, Koch said.

The gunman was described as an African American man in his 20s, with a light to medium complexion, 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-8 with a thin build. Witnesses said he has medium-length black hair combed back and was wearing a light-colored, short-sleeved shirt and dark trousers.
