AFL-CIO Chief Resists Pressure to Leave: Lane Kirkland, president of the AFL-CIO, says he had been disposed to retire--until other union officials pressured him not to do so. In the June 12 issue of U.S. News and World Report, Kirkland, 73, criticizes his opponents for mounting a “campaign of mendacity.” He also held out the possibility that he could still retire.
