Hot springs about 13 miles east of San Juan Capistrano have long drawn people who believe that bathing in the water is therapeutic.

Called San Juan Hot Springs, the waters were an especially big draw in the 1890s.

The springs in that era were promoted as a fountain of youth.

Farmers of the Santa Ana Valley would go to the springs to unwind, while tourists from other parts of California came for the healing powers attributed to the waters.

During the 1890s, several Orange County springs were popular, including a resort called Fairview on land that is now home to Orange Coast College.
