JERICHO : Kohl on West Bank
A milestone of sorts takes place here Wednesday when PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat welcomes the first Western head of government to visit Jericho, one of two areas where Palestinians now exercise limited self-rule.
German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, on an official visit to Israel, will spend the morning with Arafat in the ancient town by the Jordan River. The Palestinian leader is expected to pressure Kohl for greater financial support for xthe fledgling Palestinian Authority and to ask that he use his influence to nudge along an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank.
Arafat is also expected to meet next week with U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher to discuss a July 1 target for agreement on terms of an Israeli military withdrawal from the West Bank and for Palestinian elections.
