About 80 speedboats from around the country are scheduled to participate in a race at Castaic Lake this weekend to raise money for muscular dystrophy research, officials said.

The $10-per-day event will feature water-ski exhibitions, a car show, vendors and other entertainment in addition to the competition, said Ginger DeVine, the race’s chairperson. She said about 10 races a day are scheduled, including the Western U. S. championship Sunday, with the 110-m.p.h. vessels engaging in races similar to an auto competition.

“They race in an oval course against one another, nose to nose,” she said.

DeVine said the lower part of the lake, where the race will be held, will be closed to all except for those attending the event.

The race, scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. both days, Grand National Racing Assn.’s sole charity event, DeVine said. She said she helped found the race a year ago in the hope of eventually attracting a paid sponsor from the area.

She said the event featured about 60 boats and raised $3,000 for the March of Dimes last year. Organizers hope to at least triple that amount this year, she added.
