The director of intercultural outreach for the New York-based Korea Society is in Orange County this week to explain and promote the organization’s mission.

Shandra Llewellyn said the objective of the Korea Society, organized shortly after World War II, is to improve relations between Korean Americans and other ethnic groups in the United States and overseas.

Since the Los Angeles riots in 1992, Llewellyn said, relations between African Americans and Koreans have been tense in Southern California.

This week, she and other members of the society have been meeting with business owners and others in Los Angeles and Orange counties to gauge community relations, bridge cultural gaps and explain outreach programs.
