ANAHEIM : City Delays Vote on Antenna in Park

Share

The City Council has delayed action until June 27 on a request by AirTouch Cellular to build a 76-foot antenna in Riverdale Park.

The extra time will allow city staff members to rework a proposed license agreement with AirTouch and possibly reduce the time that the tower would be in place.

AirTouch originally asked to maintain the tower for up to 25 years.

Speaking against the cellular antenna was Councilman Bob Zemel, who said he doesn’t think residents want the tower in their neighborhood or want to lose any recreational space.

AirTouch is proposing to put the tower in a grove in the southeast quadrant of the park near Fire Station No. 8. The company would rent the property for $1,000 a month.

“It doesn’t make sense to take an inch of the park away,” Zemel said at the council’s meeting Tuesday.

Rental proceeds would be used by the city to buy new playground equipment for the park, which is on Riverdale Avenue near Lakeview Avenue.
