Child Safety Fair Scheduled at Mall

Safety tips, a giant board game and vehicle tours will be featured in a child safety fair today at Fallbrook Mall.

The second annual Play It Safe fair got a publicity boost from Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick, who talked it up at the City Council meeting on Wednesday.

“It is my hope that the residents of the San Fernando Valley will make use of this child safety fair to educate themselves and their children on how to prevent tragic accidents in and around their homes,” Chick said.

Sixteen booths will feature exhibits on how to improve safety habits in the home, at pools and in transit. One highlight of the fair will be the Safety Spin and Win game, featuring a giant spinner in which children are the game pieces that move around the board as they correctly answer safety questions.

A smashed car will be on display to show the devastating effects of a traffic accident. The fair, designed for children ages 3 to 12, will also have a firetruck and a police patrol car available for children to view.

Parents may also want to have their child’s photo and fingerprints taken, which will help police if the children become lost or missing. The child identification kits will be provided at no charge.

“The main thing is to build awareness of child-safety issues,” said Sherry Decovich, the mall’s marketing director. General Growth Management Inc., the company that owns the mall, and the Chrysler Corp. are sponsoring similar fairs in its 73 other malls nationwide.

The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the center stage and west parking lot of the mall, on Fallbrook Avenue between Victory Boulevard and Vanowen Street.
