THOUSAND OAKS : Park Officials Plan Renovation Projects

The Conejo Valley Parks and Recreation District is spending nearly $1 million on capital improvements this year, but residents will not see any new parks.

Strapped for cash, the district is in the third year of a moratorium on building projects that require new maintenance costs.

“We could build some parks, but we don’t have the money to maintain them once they’re built,” said Tom Sorenson, administrator of parks and planning for the district.

He said the district will make improvements to several projects for safety reasons.

Included on the list of renovations are a new basketball court for Hickory Park on Elkwood Avenue, four footbridges in Wildwood Regional Park on Avenida de los Arboles and the refinishing of the gym and racquetball courts at the Thousand Oaks Community Center on Moorpark Road.

Sorenson said the only new park in the area will be in the Dos Vientos project, which will be funded by developers.
