BERLIN : Wrapper at Reichstag

On Saturday at dawn, the Bulgarian-born conceptual artist Christo will carry out his most ambitious project ever, as he wraps Berlin’s once-and-future legislative center, the Reichstag, in 68 tons of silver-gray fabric and about 10 miles of heavy royal-blue rope. The task of encasing the huge building in the fabric is expected to take a staff of 220 four days. Christo says the giant work of art is “about freedom.”

The unoccupied Reichstag is about to undergo extensive renovations as Germany prepares to move its government from Bonn to Berlin. Christo plans to keep it under wraps for two weeks and then return the site to normal.
