Capital murder charges were filed Tuesday against a Rosemead man accused of killing a Glendora police agent--the first officer in that city’s history to die in the line of duty.

Daniel Hernandez, 19, faces one count of murder with the special circumstance allegations that he killed a police officer during a robbery.

Louis A. Pompei, 29, was off duty when the holdup occurred at a Vons market Friday night in San Dimas.

When he saw one of the bandits pistol-whip an employee for moving too slowly, Pompei drew his gun and exchanged shots with the robbers. The officer was hit in the chest but managed to wound the bandits, who were arrested later when they showed up at a hospital.

Services for Pompei are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove. The body will be returned to Pennsylvania for burial.
