AVENGING ANGEL: When Supervisor Maggie Kildee recently announced plans to retire, fellow board member John K. Flynn commented that he tries to see the angel in everyone, but found no sign of the divine in his departing peer. . . . In response, Kildee arrived at Tuesday’s board meeting bearing a heavenly statuette. . . . “Just in case any of you don’t know what an angel looks like, here is an angel,” she said, drawing laughter from the crowd. Flynn was out of town.

DADDY DEAREST: With Father’s Day just around the corner, grown-up kids remember wacky moments with their dads (E1). . . . Thousand Oaks-based comic Bruce Baum says one of the toughest things about being a dad is picking a name for your offspring. . . . “You say if it’s a girl, you’ll name it this, and if it’s a boy you’ll name it that,” he said. “We had a boy, so we named him That .” . . . Baum plans to take the day off this year and spend it with his kids, his dad and his grandfather.

CHOPSTICK CHARITY: Simi Valley’s China Express pulled in the crowds last month when owner Danny Chow pledged to donate food sale proceeds to the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing. . . . The response was so great that he had to borrow employees from the taco stand next door. . . . “It was amazing,” he said. “So many people showed up who really cared.” Chow raised $5,400, which he sent to the Red Cross. He was honored by the County Board of Supervisors with a special proclamation on Tuesday.

MIDNIGHT MOMENT: It was one of those Ventura City Council budget meetings that dragged into the wee hours (B1). . . . But just before midnight, the council paused from its number-crunching for a moment of silence, marking the year that has passed since the brutal slaying of Nicole Brown Simpson. . . . The moment was led by Sylvia McGinnis, executive director of the Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. . . . “There were so many vigils going on,” she said. “I felt we should be a part of that in some small way.”
