Casino Project Clears Hurdle: Players International, owner of floating casinos in Illinois and Louisiana, wants to try its hand at a land-based casino in Mesquite, Nev., complete with a “desert spa” and golf course. The Calabasas-based company has received approval from the Nevada Gaming Control Board for a non-restrictive gaming license in the Southern Nevada town about 90 miles northeast of Las Vegas. A final decision will be made by the Gaming Commission on June 21. The resort will be decorated Hawaiian-style, with some features similar to the Mirage in Las Vegas, said David A. Fishman, vice chairman of Players.
