Twenty-six boys from South-Central Los Angeles, ranging in age from 12 to 14, were honored Friday for their participation in a mentor program that paired each of them with a “big brother” firefighter.

The boys spent two hours every weekend learning about fire safety, first aid, CPR, fire prevention, exit drills, the 911 system, toxic chemicals in the home and knot tying, according to Gary Sutter, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“The mentors also checked up at the child’s school, to make sure his attendance was up to par, and they tried to give the child a better self-image,” Sutter said.

Surrounded by families, friends and their mentors, the boys were given certificates marking their completion of the course during ceremonies at Fire Station 16, in the 8000 block of Compton Avenue.
