Two women were critically injured when their van and an Orange County sheriff’s patrol car collided early Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Department said a deputy, answering a call for backup in Sunset Beach about 12:50 a.m., was driving south on Los Alamitos Boulevard when he collided with a 1994 Ford van in the intersection as it made a left from eastbound Bradbury Road.

A passenger in the van, Linda Fessuy, 39, was taken to UCI Medical Center with head and internal injuries, authorities said. The driver of the van, Deborah Geiger, 37, was also reported in critical condition. The deputy was treated for minor cuts and released.

The name of the deputy was not released pending an investigation by the California Highway Patrol. A CHP spokeswoman said no further details were available Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Department said the deputy swerved but was unable to avoid hitting the van. His car then careened off of the van and into a 1985 Toyota.

The driver of the Toyota and two passengers were treated for minor injuries.
