SIMI VALLEY : Tapo Street to Get Bulk of Quake Relief
A project to smooth a major Simi Valley street that cracked and crumbled in the Northridge earthquake deserves the bulk of a $780,000 federal quake relief grant, the City Council decided Monday.
Of the funds, awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, nearly $660,000 will go toward repairing the severely damaged Tapo Street, located at the east end of town.
Most of the rest of the funds will be used to aid small businesses hurt by the quake and to develop a high-tech computerized mapping program that will help the city quickly pinpoint problems in water, sewer, electric and other systems during emergencies.
A tiny portion of the funds--$2,100--will go toward an engineering study on the folk art buildings known as Bottle Village. The village was devastated by the quake.
