High School Football Player Shot to Death; Killer Sought

A 17-year-old high school football player who recently received a scholarship to Grambling University was killed in Inglewood on Monday when a gunman pumped bullets into the car in which he was riding.

Brandon Gerrod Webb, an Inglewood resident who this month graduated from Serra High School in Gardena, was struck several times in the head and upper body while traveling on South Crenshaw Boulevard at 11:20 a.m., Inglewood Police Officer Will Salmon said.

In the car with Webb were the driver, Cory Curtis, 17, of Rancho Cucamonga, and Raymond Radley, 18, of Inglewood. Both were uninjured.

Witnesses told police that Curtis was driving his blue Chrysler north on Crenshaw Boulevard when a white van pulled alongside. For no apparent reason, the driver of the van opened fire, spraying the car with up to a dozen bullets.

Webb was taken to Centinela Hospital where he died of his wounds. Inglewood detectives said they knew of no motive in the shooting and are asking anyone with information to call (310) 412-5246 or the city’s 24-hour anonymous tip line at (310) 412-8825.
