Love Unlimited Orchestra, “The Best of Love Unlimited Orchestra,” Mercury. ** 1/2

Popular in the mid-’70s, the symphonic soul sound of the orchestra--led by soul crooner Barry White--basically consists of guitars and a string-heavy orchestra playing lush, romantic melodies over punchy R&B; rhythms. The formula clicks on half these instrumentals, particularly on the hit single “Love’s Theme.” But the rest sounds like funky elevator music.
