Much of Orange County’s booming growth in the late 1950s resulted from the construction of the Santa Ana Freeway.
The first part of the freeway in North County was built in 1950, when it was extended for five miles from neighboring Los Angeles County.
The final part of the Santa Ana Freeway through Orange County was completed in 1958, with a linkup to the San Diego Freeway.
The construction of the Santa Ana Freeway wiped out many orange groves, and scores of housing subdivisions sprang up on the former agricultural land.
